The FL. Smithe computer programmed hydraulic die press, model PHP Series III, represents a major advancement in automatic die cutting. It dramatically increases potential daily output of accurately cut blanks from pre-printed as well as non-printed sheets.
The PHP Series III operates by pre-programming the sequence of cuts and clamp operations to cut a lift of paper in one cycle. Programs can be set to any layout desired, whether new or previously used on a conventional die press. Cuts can be made at any angle and any sequence desired. The permanent memory of the computer can store approximately 100 program positions. In addition, the disc recorder can store approximately 4,000 programs per disc.
Quick changeover is further aided by the special die support table which moves under the ram to raise the new die into place, complimenting a safe die handling procedure.
The entire concept of the machine is centered around a one-person operation. The cutting board of the machine is loaded with a lift of paper which is firmly held by powerful hydraulic clamps. The operator sends the machine through a complete cutting sequence by simply pushing the cycle start button. While the machine is cutting, the operator is free to strip out a previously cut lift that has been transferred to the stripping table. Also, the PHP Series III machine speed has been increased by 30% over earlier PHP models.
A similar version of the standard PHP III die press was recently introduced as the PHP Wide Series Ill. Its main difference being a larger cutting board to accommodate the new international standard size of 1050 x 1450mm (41.3" x 57").
Other features which contribute to the versatility of the PHP Series III machine include:
- Program is generated at the machine with minimal calculations.
- Solid state electronic circuitry in modular forms.
- Adjustable programs to compensate for sheeting errors.
- The die ejector has two modes, normal and low force. The ejector also has an adjustable stroke speed to reduce embossing of cut material.
- Pre-printed (lithograph) work, as well as large dies of many shapes and styles, can be handled with accuracy within the envelope size range of 3 1/2 (89 x 152mm) to 12 x 15 1/2 " max. (305 x 393mm). Special Dies are available upon request, contact F.L.S.
- Numerous safety features, including automatic shutoffs.
-
The cutting stroke of the press has a variable speed control to minimize die-flare by compensating for varing die-edge and paper characteristics.
