Founded in 1904 by Ferdinand L. Smithe in New York City, the F. L. Smithe Machine Company specializes in machine products for the Envelope Manufacturing Industry. In 1966, under the guidance of Edgar A. Smithe, Jr., President of the F. L. Smithe Machine Company and the grandson of the founder, the company moved to its present location in Duncansville, PA. The company is still operated by the founding Smithe Family and now includes members of the fourth generation, an incredible and rare feat in these modern days.

For over 100 years F. L. Smithe has kept pace with a changing industry and provided machines capable of manufacturing virtually any envelope seen on the market. We have also kept pace with an ever changing technology, designing machines that are operate easier, change quicker, print better and run faster than ever before. From our humble beginnings in a small machine shop to a manufacturing facility totaling over 185,000 square feet, we are poised to continue our commitment to the manufacturers of envelopes.

In 2004, our 100 year anniversary we purchased Aquaflex, a Montreal based manufacturer of narrow web presses. Aquaflex is a multi-national manufacturer of flexographic printing and converting systems, with a special focus on printer profitability.

Our policies are founded in the traditions of the past while using our experience to guide us forward. We remain proud of our reputation for building machinery to the highest standards, utilizing modern designs, as well as stressing simplicity and sturdy construction. Our expert workmanship has enabled us to produce the best value in the world of envelope machinery.
